Why the program exists
Three reasons, none of them charitable in the legal sense. Omen Services is a business. It is not a foundation and it does not claim to be one.
- 01 The quote is the problem. Agencies commonly quote $3,000 to $5,000 for a custom multi-page site. A nonprofit running on a budget under $1,000,000 hears that number, says it will look at it next year, and stays on a page from 2014. Donating the build removes the number. The $25 a month is what makes that sustainable rather than a one-off favor.
- 02 The work is the portfolio. Omen Services sells websites to paying clients. Finished sites are the evidence that the work is good, and a nonprofit site is a harder brief than most commercial ones: more audiences, more constraints, less budget for guessing. That is a fair trade and it is stated on the home page too.
- 03 The problems are interesting. Volunteer recruitment forms. Pantry hours that have to be right. Adoption listings. Clinic sliding-scale information in more than one language. These are real information design problems with a real cost to getting them wrong, which is more engaging than another brochure site.
What this is not
This is not charity and nobody here is rescuing anybody. Omen Services is a for-profit Virginia LLC and the monthly fee is revenue.
The program is worth taking seriously because the terms are written down, not because the motive is pure.
